On May 20, 2011, Beit T’Shuvah, by many standards the most successful gambling treatment center in California, will hold a seminar to discuss the benefits of reorganizing the treatment of the gambling addict in the criminal justice system. Currently, the California judicial system provides an alternative to incarceration for drug addicted and alcoholic offenders, allowing them to instead receive treatment for their addiction. Drug and Alcohol Court successfully treats north of 120,000 people each year. Also in attendance will be Judge Michael Tynan who spearheaded the Los Angeles County drug and alcohol court. Gambling addiction, long recognized by the medical community as similar in nature and severity to drug addiction, has no present parallel in the judicial system, excepting Judge Farrell’s Gambling Court in Amherst, New York.
